12. Brazil – Gifts and Flowers into the Ocean
An Afro-Brazilian ocean spirit, named Yemanja, is the focus of this Brazilian New Year’s tradition. Many Brazilians believe that by throwing white flowers or gifts into the ocean, will have the spirit grant them fresh vitality and strength. Those that practice the tradition travel to Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro to offer the gifts to the waves in hopes of the blessing.
