Parents only want their kids to grow up healthy. So, when one of their children gets sick, they may feel helpless and worried.

This Florida mother was able to save her daughter’s life after getting a call from school thanks to an article she had read one year ago.

Lacey Grace received a concerning phone call from her four year old daughter’s school one April morning.

Elianna was suffering from a high fever and had to be picked up from school. They had a policy that children with fevers had to stay home for at least 24 hours so they couldn’t get other students sick.

Lacey picked Elianna up from school and brought her home. Even though the next morning Elianna seemed fine, she couldn’t go back to school. Lacey decided to take her to work that day and have her sit at a desk and color.

Elianna went back to school, only to be picked up again. The school called to inform Lacey that the fever had come back.

Lacey wasn’t worried, at first. As a mother of two, she was used to her children getting sick thanks to being around kids all day at school.

Lacey thought about her daughter’s health more and more. She grew nervous. “There are so many times I have taken my kid to the doctor, saying I’m being a worried parent, and they say it’s a viral thing, give it a few days,” she explains.

Elianna rarely got sick, so the fact that she had a fever twice in a few days concerned Lacey. Then she remembered reading a story of Frankie Delgado Jr., another four year old.

The article was about how Frankie died last summer from having large amounts of water in his lungs. It’s what they call “dry drowning.” He had inhaled water from playing in the pool.

Dry drowning is when water enters the airways, which makes them spasm. Having water in the lungs will also cause fatal edema.

Frankie’s family was unaware of these conditions or even that dry drowning was even possible. After Frankie’s death, the doctor told them it was due to a bacterial infection.

Lacey made sure to become familiar with the symptoms: coughing, vomiting, lethargy, and blue or gray skin.

Lacey tried to remember any instances when Elianna had been playing in water recently.

Just a week before Elianna’s fever she had been splashing around in her grandmother’s pool. It was then that Lacey recalled her daughter choking on water.

Lacey had to take Elianna out of the pool because the water had made her vomit. However, just thirty minutes later she seemed fine and they thought nothing of it.

“I never would have correlated the fever to the pool incident if I hadn’t of read that story about Frankie. I was like, this is not going to happen to Elianna,” Lacey said.

Making the connection, Lacey brought Elianna to an urgent care center immediately. As they prepared for an X-Ray, Elianna started shaking uncontrollably and turned purple.

“The doctor came out and said, ‘You have to find the nearest emergency room. You need to pick the closest one. Just go.’” Once they ran some tests they discovered that Elianna had an infection in her lungs.

Thankfully Elianna was admitted into the hospital because overnight her oxygen levels dropped immensely.

Lacey reached out to Frankie’s parents and told them her story. “We’re glad to see it’s making a difference,” his parents said. Even though they lost their little boy, they wouldn’t want any other parent to lose their child to the same thing.

Elianna is a very lucky little girl. If her mom hadn’t read that article, she would never have been aware of the symptoms of dry drowning. We are glad that Elianna has recovered and back in school.

If you suspect your child is suffering from symptoms of dry or secondary drowning, take them to an emergency room immediately.
