5. The Portuguese Empire

The Portuguese Empire was one of the largest empires in history and was in fact, the first colonial empire. The lifespan of the Empire was from 1415 when they captured Ceuta until East Timor became independent in 2002—over six centuries. The expansion of the Portuguese Empire started at the age of discovery in the 15^th century and expanded all over the world. All of the conquered land includes over 53 independent modern states. The success of the Empire was due to advancements in navigation, cartography and maritime technology.
