The Golden Horde was the northwestern sector of the Mongol Empire and was established in the 13th century. The Golden Horde Khanate became an independently run sector lead by Batu Khan in 1255 and it flourished for an entire century. It developed its name from the golden tents that the Mongols used during war, as well as to represent the wealth of the Khan—which has been attributed to the Slavic influence. During the Islamic reign of Uzbeg in 1312-1341, the territory included most of Eastern Europe, extending deep into Siberia. Like many Empires, the Golden Horde spared no one who opposed the religious policy. Although a relatively short reign, the empire fell in 1395.
