From the start of the show’s conception, producers knew they wanted the parents’ hair colors contrasting and the children’s hair colors corresponding. Schwartz didn’t have an idea what the parents would look like but his goal was to have twelve child actors on standby (three blonde girls, three blonde boys, three brunette girls, and three brunette boys).
